Heading Inland

Hiking Day 4        Deba to Markina-Xemein

Miles today        16.4

Total Miles         51.6

Ascent    2514’

Descent     2180’

We start hiking by 7:45 under a mostly clear sky and quickly discover that the bridge over the river that we need to cross is completely closed due to repair construction…and has been closed for at least 4 years! A one mile detour gets us across the river at another bridge location and eventually we are back on track along the Camino.

The morning soon becomes misty as we head inland. It will be few days until we see the ocean again. We hike mostly along unpaved paths and the occasional single lane rough surface concrete road. Many of these roads see very little use or are completely abandoned, making for pleasant hiking without fear of becoming roadkill.

It is a fast paced day as we hike parts of the day with our new American friends, Elaine and Chris. It works well as their place is similar to ours. The forecast is for rain so we keep moving along, enjoying the forested trails as well as hiking through large areas of plantation trees which we think may be Eucalyptus. Scot and I stop only for one quick snack and press on into Merkina where we find the first and only coffee shop of the day. After Cafe con leches we walk the short distance to our Casa Rural, arriving by 2:30 pm. Our feet are tired but we beat the rain. Great weather so far in spite of a fair amount of mud today. We eat lunch at our accommodation and relax while we wait until 8 pm for dinner….no restaurant on this Camino serves dinner before 8 o’clock. Tough to wait that long! But beer and wine are always available!!
