After yesterday’s rain and wind which lasted well after we walked back to our hotel at 9:45 from dinner, we are concerned about what today’s weather will bring. But we awaken to blue skies and no wind with much warmer temperatures.
We depart in great spirits after a large buffet breakfast where only Scot and I and our Michigan friends are the only people eating. From our hotel window and throughout the day’s hiking we can see the “Picos de Europa”, the Peaks of Europe, which are covered in a fresh layer of snow. This mountain range extends for about 12 miles, forming part of the Cantabrian Mountains in northern Spain. These are the highest peaks in Spain with Torre de Cerredo soaring to 8,690 feet…yes, not very tall by Colorado standards!
We will be seeing these peaks for the next few days as we walk west. The day is gorgeous and sunny and the weather just perfect for hiking. The scenery is spectacular as we head a bit inland for much of the day.
On the first day of our hike in Irun I had picked up a Kiwi fruit at breakfast which turned out to be green and too hard to eat. I decided to put it in my transported suitcase for a day or two and then enjoy it once it replied. Turns out the ripping process was very slow. It had become a joke that I had this poor Kiwi in my spare hiking shoes in my suitcase day after day. Today is the day! After 18 days in my shoe, I bring it to breakfast and make a bit of a ceremony out of peeling and eating it with my breakfast yogurt! (No, it did not smell or taste like hiking shoe!)
