The Green Hurts My Eyes

 Hiking Day 25    May 3

Grado to Salas

Miles 14.7

Total Miles 347.6

Ascent 2026’

Descent 1428’

The green here is incredible. In Colorado the land is green in the spring (most years, but not so much this year) and somewhat green in the early summertime. Then things dry out and Colorado becomes more brown than green and it stays mostly brown throughout  the late summer, fall, and into winter…except when covered by snow.

This area of Spain, especially this time of year, is a different kind of green; the kind of green that is so intense that it hurts your eyes. So brilliantly green and it is everywhere you look. A green unlike anything you see in Colorado. You need sunglasses for the green!

Breakfast is eaten and at 9 am our taxi arrives to shuttle us from our accommodation in Sama back to Grado where we continue walking from the table where we enjoyed the beer yesterday. No steps are missed! We left Sama in light mist and rain gear but when the taxi drops us off in Grado, the rain has stopped the the skies are less shrouded in fog.

Our hike begins with a steep climb out of Grado. The rain gear is shed and goes into the day packs. After the first long climb we transition from pavement to dirt trails. The dirt becomes endless mud, water, and slippery rocks as we descend through the seas of green. Farm animals are abundant as is the ever present manure.

There are no coffee places along the path today, so we take a short snack break and later a nice sack lunch break. We see a lot of new pilgrims today, all of whom started the Camino Primitivo just a couple of days ago in Oviedo. Scot and I seem to be the only pilgrims who began at the start of the Camino del Norte, over 325 miles ago.

The day is medium long at just under 15 miles. No rain at all while hiking but mostly cloudy with perfect hiking temperatures. The forecast is improving we rather ahead!
